Prototype II — 5 in 5
Concept:
As a part of my next prototype, I decided to come up with a starter kit of five objects that will help people to resist their urge to smoke by diverting their mind and engaging into other activities right in that moment.
The idea to help people get themselves involved into another activity as soon as possible in order to help them escape the thought of grabbing a cigarette.
The helper kit will have the following items:
1.Water rings game
2.Fidget spinner
3.Needle and thread
4.Bubble wrap
5.Chewing gum
This kit and each item will be guided by a manual or note explaining how to use it respectively which will be useful for a quick read when you get one. These things have been decided keeping in mind different types or people as well as different levels of urge.
For example, when the urge of smoking that a person has is not as high but could turn into high, the person might look for a longer activity to engage himself to get out of it. For such a situation he could use a needle and thread for distraction or maybe water rings game. Basically something that takes him to another space and the competitive side kicks in.
If the urge if very mild, one could use a chewing gum to oppress the feeling. Whereas a fidget spinner and bubble wrap could be used in extreme cases to instantly jump on to an activity that relaxes the mind.
Challenge:
The major challenge here was to design and select items keeping in mind different types of people as well as different levels of urge or stages of the same.
Future plan:
The next action item to be able to understand the needs and results of the people even better and device a custom kit to cater specific needs.
Successful or not:
I tested this kit with a couple of people and it seemed to work in some cases for them. It requires a conscious effort to remember to pull out the kit in such situations and this habit will have to be developed by people to yield results.
